Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AND THE TRUTH

The guards dragged Julian Vance out of the study, his angry, muffled curses fading down the long corridor until the heavy oak doors were finally slammed and locked shut from the outside.

The silence that settled over the room was no longer charged with the threat of imminent violence, but it was heavy with an entirely different kind of tension. The kind born from years of buried secrets, unhealed wounds, and truths that could no longer be avoided.

Elena sat on the edge of the leather sofa, her hands trembling as she stroked Mia’s hair, trying to calm the little girl down. Mia had finally exhausted herself, her heavy eyelids drooping as she rested her head against Elena's chest, her breathing growing slow and even.

Footsteps approached the sofa. Lorenzo stopped a few feet away.

Up close, without the immediate threat of gunfire, the harsh lines of his face seemed to soften just a fraction. He looked down at the child, then slowly raised his gaze to meet Elena’s frightened, exhausted eyes.

"You were going to run again," Lorenzo said quietly. It wasn't an accusation; it was a statement of fact.

Elena swallowed hard, her chin lifting with a spark of stubborn defiance. "What else was I supposed to do, Lorenzo? Look at this house. Look at the men, the guns, the blood on your hands. I didn't want this life for her. I wanted her to grow up somewhere safe, somewhere normal, where she wouldn't have to look over her shoulder every time a car backfired in the street."

"And you thought hiding in my own home was the safest place?" A dry, self-deprecating smile touched the corner of his lips. "You worked six floors beneath my office for six months. You walked past my guards every single day."

"It was the only place Vance would never think to look for me," Elena shot back, her voice rising slightly before she caught herself, glancing down to make sure Mia didn't wake up. "Everyone knows Elena Voss died in that plane crash off Sicily. I kept my head down, I did my job, and I prayed to God our paths would never cross."

"And yet," Lorenzo murmured, taking a slow step closer, his voice dropping to an intimate, resonant rumble, "she walked right through those doors, climbed past my men, and called me Daddy."

Elena looked away, a fresh wave of heat stinging her cheeks. "She's three. She saw a tall man in a suit—"

"She has my eyes, Elena," Lorenzo interrupted softly, crouching down until he was eye-level with her on the sofa. His large hand reached out, his fingers gently catching her chin and forcing her to look at him. "And you have spent three years running from a ghost that was never going to let you go."

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. The touch of his hand sent a familiar, terrifying jolt through her system—the same electricity she had fought against the day she fell in love with him, and the same electricity that had terrified her enough to fake her own death to escape his world.

"I was protecting her," Elena whispered, a tear finally escaping and tracking down her cheek.

"I know," Lorenzo said, his thumb gently brushing the tear away with a tenderness that completely belied his reputation as the city's most feared criminal. "And you did a remarkable job. But she is my blood, Elena. And so are you. Neither of you are running anywhere ever again."
