Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

Julian Vance stepped fully into the crimson-lit study, his expensive leather shoes stepping casually over the body of his fallen mercenary as if it were nothing more than a discarded piece of trash.

He didn't carry a rifle; instead, a polished silver revolver hung loosely from his right hand, the barrel pointed lazily toward the floor. His eyes gleamed with the manic satisfaction of a man who believed he had finally won an impossible game.

"Lorenzo," Vance purred, spreading his arms wide in a mock gesture of hospitality. "I must admit, your security is slipping. It’s almost too easy to walk right into the lion's den these days."

Lorenzo didn't lower his carbine. The red dot sight remained locked squarely on the center of Vance’s chest. "You stepped into a tomb, Julian. You just haven't realized the door locked behind you."

Vance let out a dry, barking laugh. "Is that supposed to frighten me? Look around you, Moretti. Your men in the east wing are currently dealing with a very unpleasant gas leak, your communications are jammed, and your little private sanctuary has just been compromised. You're outmatched."

Vance’s gaze slowly drifted past Lorenzo, landing squarely on the desk where Elena sat frozen, shielding Mia with her entire body. Vance’s smile widened, turning into something predatory and cruel.

"Ah. And here I thought the ghost had vanished for good," Vance said softly, taking a slow step forward. "Elena. You caused me a great deal of trouble three years ago. Walking away with my ledger... that was a very expensive mistake."

"I don't have your ledger, Julian," Elena managed to choke out, her voice taut with fury and fear. "I threw it into the sea the night I escaped your compound."

"A charming fairy tale," Vance replied, raising his silver revolver just a fraction of an inch. "Unfortunately, I don't believe in happy endings for thieves. And especially not for traitors who think they can breed with my enemies."

Vance’s eyes flicked briefly down toward Mia, who was still burying her face in Elena's chest.

"Such a shame," Vance murmured, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "Such a pretty little thing. It would be tragic if an accidental stray bullet found its way across the room..."

Before Vance could finish the sentence, the air in the room shifted.

It wasn't a threat. It wasn't a warning. It was the absolute, crushing weight of a predator whose territory had just been threatened.

Lorenzo didn't yell. He didn't negotiate. With a cold, mechanical precision, he shifted his aim downward—not at Vance’s chest, but directly at Vance’s right knee.

"You finish that sentence, Julian," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a register so icy it made the air feel like frost, "and I will feed you your own teeth before I scatter your remains across the bottom of the Mediterranean."

Vance froze, the smirk slipping from his face as he looked into Lorenzo's eyes and saw the absolute, terrifying certainty of a man who meant every single word.

"You wouldn't dare," Vance spat, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple. "If I die, my secondary units upload the encryption keys to every federal agency in the country. Your entire empire goes down with me, Moretti."

Lorenzo didn't blink. "Try me."
