Chapter 6 - TURNING THE TIDES

The standoff in the dimly lit study hung by a razor-thin thread. Every muscle in Lorenzo’s body was coiled like a spring, his finger resting lightly on the trigger of his carbine, while Vance’s hand twitched nervously around the grip of his silver revolver.
"You're bluffing," Vance hissed, though his eyes darted toward the door as if calculating his escape route. "You have too much to lose. An empire built on decades of blood—you're going to throw it all away for a maid and a bastard child?"
"She is not a bastard," Lorenzo replied, his voice flat, absolute, and carrying a terrifying finality. "And she is certainly not a maid."
Before Vance could process the chilling implication of those words, the low, steady hum of the estate’s emergency power grid suddenly cut out entirely—replaced by a sharp, electronic chirp from the wall panel near the door.
Bzzzt.
The red emergency strobes died instantly, plunging the room into pitch blackness for a fraction of a second before the hidden auxiliary systems kicked in, bathing the study in a crisp, brilliant white tactical light.
Simultaneously, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the hallway—not the deliberate, sluggish pace of Vance’s mercenaries, but the rapid, synchronized march of Lorenzo’s personal elite guard unit.
"Clear!" shouted a voice from the doorway.
Vance’s head snapped toward the entrance just as three of his remaining men, stationed in the corridor as back-up, were unceremoniously disarmed, slammed against the stone walls, and cuffed before they could even raise their weapons. The trap Vance thought he had sprung had just snapped shut around him.
Vance’s face lost all its color. He looked back at Lorenzo, realizing too late that the communication jamming he had boasted about had been an intentional diversion—a digital honeypot designed to lure him out into the open.
"You set a trap," Vance whispered, the realization finally dawning on him.
"You made the mistake of stepping onto my property, Julian," Lorenzo said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, closing the distance between them. "You thought because I was distracted by ghosts from my past, I had grown weak."
Vance raised his revolver in a desperate, last-ditch effort, his finger tightening on the trigger—
Crack.
Lorenzo didn't miss. The suppressed carbine barked once, a clean, surgical shot that shattered Vance’s right wrist. The silver revolver dropped from Vance’s limp hand, clattering uselessly against the marble floor.
Vance let out a sharp cry of agony, clutching his shattered wrist as he staggered backward, collapsing hard against the edge of the mahogany desk.
Two of Lorenzo’s elite guards poured into the room instantly, subduing Vance with practiced efficiency, forcing him face-down onto the floor and pinning him with heavy tactical boots.

The room fell silent once more, save for the heavy breathing of the guards and the soft, frightened whimpers of little Mia, who was still clutching Elena tightly.
Lorenzo lowered his weapon, handing the carbine to a guard without taking his eyes off Vance on the floor. Then, he turned slowly and walked back toward the desk where Elena and Mia were huddled.
