Chapter 8 - REBUILDING FROM THE ASHES

The morning sun broke through the tall, arched windows of the Moretti estate, casting long, golden beams across the polished marble floors of the grand library. The signs of the previous night's chaos—the shattered drywall, the cordite smoke, the bullet casings—had already been meticulously cleaned away by an efficient team of staff who knew better than to ask questions.
In the private family quarters on the third floor, a space that hadn't seen laughter or domestic warmth in over a decade, the atmosphere was entirely transformed.
Mia was sitting on the plush rug in the center of the spacious sunroom, happily stacking colorful wooden blocks while a massive, heavily armed bodyguard stood awkwardly nearby, handing her pieces whenever she pointed at them. The guard looked utterly terrified—not of Julian Vance or rival syndicates, but of dropping the blocks and making the little girl cry.
A few feet away, standing by the open balcony doors that overlooked the sprawling manicured gardens, Elena stood with a cup of untouched black coffee in her hands. The cool morning breeze stirred her hair, carrying the fresh scent of blooming jasmine and wet grass.
Footsteps approached from behind, steady and familiar.
A warm, heavy weight settled over her shoulders as Lorenzo draped a cashmere shawl around her to ward off the morning chill. He didn't say anything at first; he simply stood beside her, looking out over the estate grounds where federal authorities—quietly bribed and managed through Moretti's extensive legal network—were currently hauling away Julian Vance and his remaining associates to a federal prison from which they would never return.
"Vance's network has been completely dismantled," Lorenzo spoke softly, breaking the quiet. "His assets are frozen, his safe houses seized. There is no one left who can—or will—ever threaten you again."
Elena took a slow sip of her coffee, the warmth spreading through her chest. She turned her head to look at him, taking in the relaxed set of his shoulders, the absence of the perpetual, coiled tension that had defined him for years.
"It feels strange," Elena admitted quietly. "For three years, every shadow was an enemy. Every knock on the door was someone coming to finish what started on that boat."
"You don't have to look over your shoulder anymore," Lorenzo said, turning to face her fully. He reached out, gently taking the coffee mug from her hands and setting it aside on the stone railing, replacing it by wrapping his arms securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. "You are safe here, Elena. Both of you."
Elena looked up into those piercing blue-gray eyes, searching for any trace of doubt, any hidden danger. But she found only an anchor—deep, unwavering, and absolute.
She let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for three long years, her arms coming up to wrap around his neck as she leaned her head against his shoulder.
May you like
Across the room, Mia let out a triumphant cheer as her tower of wooden blocks finally toppled over, clapping her hands together in delight.
Lorenzo glanced over at the little girl, a genuine, soft smile touching his lips—a smile that no one outside of these four walls would ever witness, and a smile that belonged entirely to them.
